The American Dream and Nightmares
By reading some American classics like Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller and Of Mice and Men, our class will be examining the American Dream -- if it really exists or just exist for some -- and pairing these readings with some modern essays on the topic. We will use American Gothic short stories to experience some of the fears and nightmares that come from American insecurities. Inquiry questions: What is the American Dream? To what extent is it achievable by all? What values does it reflect?
