Pre-AP Things Fall Apart Unit
"If you hear only one side of the story, you have no understanding at all."
---Chinua Achebe, The Atlantic Online, August 2, 2000
While still discussing the danger of a singe story, the Things Fall Apart Unit focuses on post colonial literature elements as we follow characterization, theme, and Achebe's style. This unit of study focuses on the IB-MYP key concept of communication as we discuss the global context of orientation of time and space. Inquiry questions we will explore during this unit are as follows:
- How do families shape our identity/actions and what is the individual ultimately responsible for?
- How do social customs create/affect our sense of identity?
- How can we work to understand literature from a different culture / time period - what themes transcend?
- How can we work as a community to discuss and unpack meaning from a text?
